This holiday season, Curly Girl Collective (CGC) is committed to promoting self-love to young girls of color. On December 5th, CGC is hosting ALL Dolled Up, a holiday event that invites fellow curly girls to donate brown/curly dolls to a community-based organization in NYC that serves low-income and disadvantaged girls. If you’re in the New York City area, this is an evening you don’t want to miss!
Last Thursday I had the honor of sitting front row (well, front table) at ESSENCE Magazine’s “Smart Beauty VII: The Power of Confidence: Reflections on Black Beauty Now” panel event. As part of the presentation, the Smart Beauty VII panel featured a mix of beauty industry experts, tastemakers and legends including: my girl Patrice Grell Yursik, creator, Afrobella.com; Iman, Founder & CEO, Iman Cosmetics; Gabrielle Union, actress; Bethann Hardison, former model, agent and fashion advocate; and ESSENCE Editor-at-Large and event moderator Mikki Taylor. The discussion was BEYOND inspiring so I had to share a few of the highlights with you!
The talented Camara Aunique Beauty, one of my favorite NYC makeup artists and all around fly girl, is hosting her very first workshop in Brooklyn on October 19th titled The Beauty of Makeup. In this three-hour workshop you will learn to turn your basic makeup application skills into perfection, and look like you had it professionally done! Join Camara as she shares insider tips on how to get a flawless face with the foundation, concealer, and powder techniques that won’t have you looking overdone, apply bronzer to give you a healthy glow, like you’re sun-kissed from a sexy island vacation, and perfect the smokey eye! If you’ve ever looked at someone and thought, “how does her makeup look so good?” – now’s the time to be THAT woman.
Did you get to attend Brown Girl Marketing’s Halo Beauty Lounge in New York City last weekend? If you follow me on Instagram (@inhershoesblog), my followers experienced a sneak peek with a few of the fabulous photos I shared. Produced by Ylorie Anderson, Halo Beauty Lounge offered emerging product lines with opportunities to create engagement marketing experiences for women who are beyond passionate about beauty and style. With over 100 guests, Halo Beauty Lounge provided boosted exposure and an environment to truly connect with each woman in the room. From massages compliments of Shea Moisture, mock-tinis from Curls, and professional hair consultations from EDEN BodyWorks, women got to meet the personalities behind the brands they know and love while testing both new and “tried and true” product offerings
Fashion Week may be behind us but the connections made during the seven (plus) days of non-stop event-hopping live on. I had the pleasure of experiencing Lianne Farbes’ must-attend COCKTAILS & COUTURE event again this year and not to sound cliché, but like fine wine, this soiree gets better with time. As a veteran beauty expert and creator of TheMakeUpGirl.net, Lianne Farbes hosted the bi-annual COCKTAILS & COUTURE Beauty & Blogger networking event at the chic 320 Studios in midtown Manhattan. COCKTAILS & COUTURE, the beauty maven’s largest production to date, was co-hosted by celebrity manicurist, TracyLee Percival and beauty pioneer Jennifer Walsh. Hear all about this fabulous event and get to know COCOTIQUE, one of the participating vendors, today on In Her Shoes!

On the evening of May 7th, a couple hundred of Ursula Stephen’s staunch supporters descended upon Fort Greene, Brooklyn to celebrate the official opening of the talented stylist’s new salon. The space was packed from wall-to-wall with a fabulous mix of the beauty industry’s “who’s who”, Ursula’s supportive family and friends, clients, and well-wishers. Check out this video, produced by Molaundo Jones of The Clever Agency, to get a look at how the night unfolded!
To commemorate the launch of its new Coconut Shea collection, my client EDEN BodyWorks hosted “Style with EDEN” in New York City on Wednesday, March 20th at Midtown hot spot, Pranna. Guest speakers for the evening included: Celebrity Hair Stylist and Founder of Loving Your Hair with Natural Care, Felicia Leatherwood; BlackEnterprise.com Style Contributor and Image Consultant, Kéla Walker; Latisha Daring, Designer, Ashtyn LLC; and Milly Almodovar, Beauty Editor, Cosmopolitan for Latinas and founder, BeautyLogicBlog.com. The swanky after work affair gave New York City style mavens a chance to dig deep into their favorite topics: hair, beauty, and fashion with some of the best in the business.
After embracing my natural hair texture for over 10 years, I pretty much thought I had my curls figured out. I’ve learned that I have a lot of “fine” hair, so while all of the puddings and gels were great for some, they only weighed my hair down. I’ve learned that my natural hair, if not properly infused with moisture, can be as dry as the Sahara Dessert. I’ve mastered the use of cream-based curl enhancers and leave-in conditioners, realizing that when it came to products on my hair, less is truly more. And last but certainly not least, I’ve learned that when it comes to curly hair, all cuts are NOT created equal.
Check out a few behind the scenes pics from my first (but certainly not last!) Ouidad Salon experience. I walked in with a tired ponytail and left out with a great trim coupled with shiny, bouncy, and simply gorgeous curls. Don’t believe me? Just watch
Join us for the Michelle O 4th Year Anniversary Cocktails event tomorrow evening! Amidst much of today’s TV content which purports that women (especially black women) do NOT get along, Michelle O Brunch exists to challenge this narrative of female discord. Throughout the year, the organization highlights and celebrates women who make it their responsibility to build bridges with other women. So, in their first event of 2013, during Women’s History Month, they’ll showcase women who are currently steering initiatives that connect and support women and encourage you to network with others.
As many of you know, I’m a beauty PR and events consultant via my company, Crush Media by day and blogger by night. I’m happy to announce that one of my favorite clients, EDEN BodyWorks, is preparing to launch their new Coconut Shea Collection and I’m joining forces with the brand to spread the good word.
If you’re not busy on March 20th, I’m inviting you to join EDEN BodyWorks as we launch our Style with EDEN event series in New York City at Pranna! Witness the unveiling of the brand’s new product line and a must-see collaboration by special hair care and fashion industry guests
