Don’t forget to tune in or set your DVR for CNBC’s special, “The New Black Overclass,” this Thursday night (2.26.09) at 9 p.m. EST. No DVR and Thursday night plans? No worries…it re-airs at 1 a.m. EST for all you night owls out there.

Wall Street Journal reporter Lee Hawkins created this special report based off of his new book, NEWBOS: The Rise of America’s New Black Overclass. The show will highlight Black celebrity entrepreneurs who struggled their way to the top and are now making a way for future generations. While the focus is on entrepreneurs in entertainment, I find it interesting that he does not seem to touch on any female entrepreneurs – he discusses Bob Johnson but no Oprah?

It’s great to see that the media recognizes that there is success in the Black community beyond the Huxtables (and now the Obamas). This should definitely be an interesting watch, but it would be nice to see a program like this including women…

P.S. – If Thursday’s special leaves you wanting more and you’d like to check out NEWBOS the book, it’s currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com

    Great post, Kamari!

NEWBOS. Hmmmm…do I smell a new marketing term?

This sounds really interesting… I wonder how Hawkins went about making his decision of who to include. Are people like Jay-Z (people who not only struggled but were forced into a life of illegal activity) going to be included?

Not cool that Oprah is not included-no question she is one of the most influential entrepreneuers of all time, Black, woman, or otherwise, and she definately fits in the rags-to-riches category.

Perhaps a woman entrepreneuer can write a book about women NEWBOS… Kamari?

Never-the-less, I will be sure to tune in.

  • Thanks for the post! I had no idea about the show….I will be tuning in for sure.
